Hyperlinked image in post opens to blank popup

Hopefully I can explain this well!
I am creating a post and have added a photo from my media library to use as a button – like “click here”. When I add the hyperlink to the page I would like it to direct to it does not work. All that happens is a white pop up window appears. I’ve tried un-clicking the “open in a new window” option, I’ve tried different photos, different posts. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this happens and how to fix it. So currently I have just text hyperlinked and that works just fine. But no image. Can anyone help me figure this out?
