I've been trying to solve this problem for 2 days now. I've search ed the forums and tried just about everything with no luck.
I'm running:
Wordpress 3.1
PHP Version 5.2.6
Media Temple (dedicated-virtual) server.
memory_limit = 32mb
THE ISSUE
Upon uploading a jpg via the flash uploader I geat a red 'http error" after crunching.
Using the browser uploader I get HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error.
This only happens on certain images. The image size is under 2mb.
please help

The suggested fix is to installed the Non Flash Uploader plugin. This disables the flash uploader option however this doesn't fix the problem. Now I seem to be getting the Blank screen of death after I attempt to upload an image.

I am experiencing the same issue as you @pawpawsteve on a multisite installation. I am however able to upload smaller images, why would this be you WP pro's out there is there something in the "crunching..." that is timing out? where would I go to check for an error?
- Upload limit is set at 2 meg, files of 200k fail while 5k images get through.

I have recieved the little red error text "HTTP error" and "IO error"

Also using Media Temple (dv) 4.0. Tried this and it it worked for meā¦read "'HTTP error' When Uploading Files."
http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/(dv)_4.0:Resolve_FastCGI_issues#.27HTTP_error.27_When_Uploading_Files
BTW, my PHP install is running as FastCGI. I have had no issues with WordPress since changing from Apache. You must be running as FastCGI for the above to work I believe.
