I am having a problem with uploading and deleting media after I updated my WordPress installation to the new version 3.8. The website has been in existence for a few years and previous updates did not cause errors when uploading media.

    The Website is http://www.womenwearingthepants.org/wwtp/

When I try to upload new media by inserting in a post, or upload new media directly into the Media Library, I receive an HTTP error. I tried the Browser Uploader and received the Internal Error message, and the Multi File Uploader I received HTTP error.

When I look back in the Media Library after receiving the error, sometimes the image file name is listed after the failed upload, but the image is only 1×1 pixel.

I have tried following solutions but none have worked.
    1) I have disabled and deleted all plugins
    2) I have re-created a new plugins folder
    3) I have tried several other themes
    4) I have reinstalled wordpress
    5) I have deleted whole site and replaced it with fresh copy of wordpress and then uploaded my own .htaccess & wp-config.php & wp-content.
    6) I have tried altering the file and folder permissions
    7) I have changed permalinks options
    8) I have tried many different images with different names and different file sizes
    9) I have switched the theme to the default WordPress theme
    10) I cleared the browser cache on multiple computers
    11) I tried Explorer and Firefox on a PC and a Mac
    12) I have opened a Private Browser in both Firefox and Explorer on both Mac and PC and tried uploading images

The only steps I have not dealt with is PHP or Apache configuration, as I do not have access to these server side configurations.

I read through several posts here for possible solutions and tried many of them, but to no avail. And recently I have been speaking with the hosting company (Flexihostings) and they have not been able to help resolve this either.

Here is the response from Flexihostings:

“We could see an error in the log file.

    php: UnableToAcquireString `Cannot allocate memory’ @ string.c/AcquireString/126, referer: http://www.womenwearingthepants.org/wwtp/wp-admin/media-new.php

We have tried most of the troubleshooting procedures for tracing out the issue and couldn’t find any as of now. We have cleared the error related to the php pasted below. But that didn’t solve the issue with the “Http error” we were getting. So for sorting this issue we need your cooperation.

Please open a ticket to word-press related to this and let us know the details they are providing on the same so that we can make necessary changes. We are not getting any error logs now. So providing more information from them can lead us to solution.

    php: UnableToAcquireString `Cannot allocate memory’ @ string.c/AcquireString/126, referer: http://www.womenwearingthepants.org/wwtp/wp-admin/media-new.php
    —“

Any suggestions you may have will save my sanity. Many thanks in advance.

  • That sounds like some sort of server issue. What did your hosts actually say about this message?

esmi, thank you for reading my long post. Right at the end of my post I included they found an error in the log file:

    php: UnableToAcquireString `Cannot allocate memory’ @ string.c/AcquireString/126, referer: http://www.womenwearingthepants.org/wwtp/wp-admin/media-new.php

I’m not sure what to do with this information, so I am hoping a WP expert might know the next step.

Could be related to a problem with PHP/Fast-CGI’s default maximum request length. See my other post and let me know if that works for you.

Thank you, I have gone back to my hosting support and asked them to review the server side settings for default maximum request.

In addition I also added the code suggested by pburke to my .htaccess file.

My hosting support replied back that they “reconfigured the php settings” but did not provide me with specifics.

The images are now uploading to the site. I appreciate your help!

Hi, for over a week now, I’ve been getting server 301 error, moved permanently message each time I try to post to my blog after attaching images using the wordpress app on my Blackberry Bold 5. I tried it several times and I kept getting the same message. So I switched to using an android device, the post successfully delivered with the image attached. So I returned to try to post with my Bold 5 and I got the same “Server 301 Error” So I took out the image from the post and tried publishing without the image attached to the post and it delivered. So the dilemma in summary is, I can’t publish news items with images using the Blackberry wordpress app unless I exclude the images, the items will get Published. Each time I click the Help menu on the server 301 error- Moved permanently pop – up, I get redirected to http://www.blacberry.wordpress.org/faq and I see this message [ http://www.naijayarnz.wordpress.com is marked private by it’s owner ] now ve tried all privacy settings I know of trying to fix this, but I just can’t… I urgently need to get this resolved sir / madam, please I need your help.
