I use the auto generated exceprt view for my main index page, archive pages, search page, etc and have noticed that WP strips the html formating for these 40 word summaries. This is all find and good for links, but what about an image that I have placed that the top of the article that I wan't featured? Is there a way to change how this works?

The easiest way is to use the excerpt_reloaded plugin, which allows you to specify which formatting is kept for your excerpts.
