.htaccess woes... (4 posts)

Okay. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having problems with this file. I'm trying to setup Permalinks, but I guess I'm doing something wrong. Apparently, I'm caught in some kind of endless loop. I've got my Permalink settings set like this:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

As soon as I set this up, my theme went away and I had what looked like a plain old html file on the screen. I clicked the "back" button on my browser and I keep getting all of these pages that tell me I don't have access to anything on the site.

Following the recommendation of another thread, I deleted the contents of my .htaccess file, reuploaded it and I'm at least able to get my theme back and I can access the Site Admin page....until I try to access the Permalinks subpage. The moment I click on that, I'm back in the same loop as before.

Initially, I was just trying to get a Page to show up on my site. Anyone who is curious can take a look at the beginnings of my site. http://www.leerep.org. I was attempting to create a page called "Mission Statement", and I had gotten myself to the point where I could see my text if I wasn't trying to use Permalinks.

The rub is that I'm pretty sure that I want to use Permalinks for my posts, but I don't seem to be able to do that (yet). I'm still working with my webhost to make sure that I'm set up correctly.

Here's what I need help with (in this order):
    1) I need to get out of this vicious cycle that I'm in. (I even tried deleting and re-installing WordPress on the server, but it told me that it was already installed (after I cleared everything off the site).

    2) I need to get Pages working with Permalinks on my site. I have access to write to my .htaccess file and my webhost is running Apache server, but none of the fixes that I've found on the site seem to fix this problem.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks!

Well, you didn't try to use /%category%/ - that's good...I had problems with that one.

You could try running upgrade.php instead of install.php?

As you mentioned, a lot people run into snags over this...perhaps one of these threads could help you out?

You'll have to use phpMyAdmin to delete (drop) the tables in the database in order to reinstall WP.

Make sure you're putting the .htaccess file in the WP root folder.

Well, I wound up temporarily not using Permalinks. I reloaded the site twice and tried all of the suggestions above, but I just couldn't get it to work. I still want to use them. Is this a feature that I can add at any point, or should I worry about it now?

    Thanks for all the help!
