Hello:
I have my wordpress set up and working.
When I try to activate the permalinks, it says that I have to edit the htaccess file. I don't see any htaccess files. I think wordpress didn't created it. Anyways, I don't know what I have to edit so searching in google, I have tried a lot of ways to create the file, but I allways get an error.
Can someone help me?

I have seen that. I use Filezilla. It seem like the htaccess file doesn't exists! I have tried to create it myself but it brokes my site...
Any ideas? -

Can you clarify what you mean by it broke the site, did an error appear? did you see a blank page?
Are you using Linux or Windows hosting?

I don't know so much about programming so I try creating it copying from tutorials and more found in google.
I get a 500 error:Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, cpanel@hosting24.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Posted 1 year ago #Usually a 500 error means there's an issue with the htaccess file, remove the one you(or WordPress) created, and see if the error then disappears.
If this is free hosting, i can personally say that i had no end of problems, including 500 errors when attempting to use the free service with 000webhost (even signed up several times to see if performace differed - it did, but not much).
Can you just confirm if the htaccess file exists, and if removing it helps.
NOTE: Bearing in mind, Filezilla doesn't show hidden files by default, in order to see the file you'll need to check "Force showing hidden files" under the Server menu (in Filezilla).

Posted 1 year ago #I have donde that, and I can confirm: .htaccess file does not exists. Obviuosly the error dissapears when I delete the file. I'm actually running my site without the htaccess file and all works fine... All except the permalinks of course.
I don't know what to do :(

Contact your hosting provider and ask if
mod_rewriteis enabled on your server. -
Posted 1 year ago #The WordPress rewrite rules i think wrap themselves in an if mod_rewrite check, without mod_rewrite enabled the rewrite rules should just be ignored (not produce a 500 error).
Does this same problem occur when an empty htaccess file is present?
Is the installation in a sub-folder, and if so, is a htaccess file present in the top level directory? -

Posted 1 year ago #In Filezilla try Server > Force showing hidden files. Then reconnect and/or hit refresh a few times to see if the .htaccess shows up in the public root of site files.

Posted 1 year ago #I'd suggest asking the host whether they support using a htaccess file with their service and whether they can advise you on what the root of your problem is, simply explain that you're trying to use permalinks with WordPress, they should be able to advise.

Posted 1 year ago #It's a simple of question of does their service support using mod_rewrite.
I'd find another host personally, simply out of principle alone.. it's just rude to say we won't answer a simple question because you're not giving us money for a premium service. If they had time to answer the email, they had time to simply say whether you can use mod_rewrite with the service or not.
Such a shame, and i'm not sure what to advise, but i can tell you i personally had no end of problems using WordPress on free webshosts (experience for others may differ). I use WordPress.com myself, simply because it's free and i do little blogging, perhaps that might be an option for you to?

Posted 1 year ago #I had wordpress.com before, but I needed some plugins to install and that's why I changed to a personal host. I know that the answer was so rude... Maybe you could recommend me another host....

Posted 1 year ago #GoDaddy offer free hosting i think, but that might possibly be tied to a domain purchase/renewal/transfer, but i do know we have several users here that use it.

I had some time ago a paid hosting, but I can't pay one at this moment, so I have tu se free ones... I'll try to move to a new one :)
