Hi, we did not get an .htaccess file with the installation package, and would like to obtain the general syntax for parsing out the ".php" file extentions in favor of a character: / (common setup)
    Thanks in advance.

In options->permalinks, turn on Permalinks, with a desired structure, and wordpress will generate the .htaccess rules, which you can copy into a file, name the file .htaccess and copy it to the wordpress folder in your server.

Thanks, 2fargon, but what about parsing the .html (or .php) file extentions in this case? For example:
    http://www.wordpress.org/some-page.php
    -- to --
    http://www.wordpress.org/some-page/
Standard mod_rewrite stuff, but we couldn't figure out where to place the proper syntax inside the autogenerated Permalinks/Wordpress one.
    Thanks!
