I installed wordpress on my server, but I don't even have an htaccess file installed with it. Is the installation supposed to create one for me, or do I create one on my own? Please advise, thanks!

No. You have to create a blank text file and name it .htaccess (don't forget to remove the .txt extension), then upload it and change the permissions to 666. :)

you can also name it .htaccess when saving the file and add quote marks, this ensures the file is named as is and no txt extension is added.

so when prompted to save as use ".htaccess" with the quotes. upload it to the root of your install directory (if I remember correctly) and as wench says, add the permission to it by right clicking in your ftp client and selecting chmod/attributes.
