What sort of effect could modifying a .htaccess file have on your website?
I simply added a new line of code to mine which read:

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.codbo.co.uk

After I uploaded it all links went back to my main page. So I removed that line and no all my links are broken.

Is the change related to the problem?????

It can have a profound effect – such as stopping the whole site dead in its tracks. You don’t need an ErrorDocument line in your .htaccess file. WP manages your 404s.

Any idea how I can put it back. Check http://www.codbo.co.uk you will see how screwed and desperate for help I am.
I’m not good with wordpress

Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.
