   The .htaccess file on one of my recent installations has 3 times this week somehow got a "s" (no quotes) added to the end of the file, which has caused the site to crash.

   Also one, or two blank lines are also added at the top.

   The host syas they suspect malicious attempts to access the site (according to the IP addrsses they could track in their log.

   The system software is up to date. The .htaccess permissions are 644.

   What else can I do?

   The whole site should be 755 except .htaccess and wp-admin/index.php which should be 644.
