I'm wanting to be able to work on customizing a second theme for my site but do not want it to be live. Is there a way I can make it only visible to me while working on it and not my visitors? Thanks.

Answering the question directly..... no there is not. But, what you can do is install WP localy on your machine (See http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/ for some info on doing this) and use the local copy to build your new site. Once it's done, you can upload the needed files and activate the new theme.

Or you can use this plugin to make your site unavailable why you test your site.

I am at this very moment working on customizing a theme without having it live. What I do is copy the "ThemeX" directory into "ThemeX2" and rename the theme name in the css to "ThemeX2". I then use the theme switcher plugin to switch to the test theme and hack away. Once done I copy the results into "ThemeX" (remembering to rename the theme name in the css).
