How to use Wootheme Portfolios and Galleries for blogs

Hi all – great forum here maybe you can help me

On my site http://www.cloudclumps.com i have installed a wootheme called athena
As you will see it has a portfolio selection menu on the front page (below the intro paragraph) when you click on one of the images it takes you to a portfolio gallery page and then upon clicking on one of those takes you to the actual portfolio

Is it possible to edit this theme so that I can use this same method to control a sort of Blog menu for example on the home page i would have topics associated with each of those pics eg recipes cars games etc
them when you click on the recipes picture it would take you to another page with all those photo circles – they would be the sub categories i.e main courses, starters, desserts then clicking on them would bring you to the blog/ recipes within

Maybe this is impossible I don’t know
I am prepared to get my hands dirty with code if i have to but have no experience in css
