How to? Two Separate Sites, Two Domain Names, One Web Host (7 posts)

    Hello All,

What I have: I have two websites with two working domain names and one GoDaddy Webhost. The main site and domain name is http://aurashouse.com . If I look at my files in an FTP program, I have a separate subfolder within all my files/folders for http://aurashouse.com called "kpalana.com." http://kpalana.com is my personal website and it is a static site that doesn't use WordPress.

    What I want:
I would like kpalana.com to be a wordpress site with its own separate theme, etc. The domain name already works.

What I did so far: I have downloaded a new WordPress 3.1. How do I install it so that kpalana.com is a wordpress site?

Why I am Scared to do Anything Else Before Asking Smart People Like You:
I am afraid I might screw up my existing sites if the same username/password is involved. I'm more of a designer/ right brained person so am afraid to screw anything up.

Can you please give me simple, easy-to-follow instructions on what I need to do?

    Thanks so much!

    Best,
    Kristen

  2. Heh. A logical fear.

First and foremost, make GOOD BACKUPS!!!

Secondly, ask GoDaddy Webhost if you are permitted to run MultiSite on your account. I seem to recall they restrict it!

Now, if they say yes, then the good news is that there IS a way to do this WITHOUT affecting your current http://kpalana.com site! See? Happiness already!

    1) Turn aurashouse.com into a Multisite.
    2) Create a subsite called kpalana (doesn't matter if it's subdomain or subfolder)
    3) Build out kpalana as you want it to look, leaving the existing stuff alone.
    4) Install http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/ and set it up so kpalana is kpalana.com
    5) Change your DNS to point kpalana from the /kpalana.com folder to the MAIN part of your site (it'll be one folder up from /kpalana.com )
    6) Tip your waitstaff.

I know it's all new and stuff, so the best way to mitigate the fear involved is to have a backup plan. What the worst that can happen*? Plan for it. :D That's what backups are for. Make sure you have those and can restore them, then *you* know if it gets too scary you can make it go back the way it was. :)

    * I actually have a couple of these stories, that DID work out in the end. :D

    Thanks for the great answers.
Question: If I did a separate WP install in the kpalana subfolder, what would happen next? Would I see a WordPress site immediately with a defaut theme when I went to http://kpalan.com ? Would I log in using the same username and password as my other aurashouse.com site? Would they be two separate sites that I can get to from one dashboard?

For me, if I can get it to work that way, I think I'd feel more comfortable since I already installed WP once on Aura's House (back in 2008)and I don't remember it being overly traumatic. Also, if GoDaddy doesn't support Multisite then isn't this my only other option?

I am backing up everything (in 2 locations) and plan to ask GoDaddy about Multisite.

    Thanks again for your help!
    K

    Yes.

Would I log in using the same username and password as my other aurashouse.com site? Would they be two separate sites that I can get to from one dashboard?

No to both. The only way to have THAT would be MultiSite (or POSSIBLY wp-hive).

OK. This is very helpful. Thanks!
One more question...If putting the wordpress install in the subfolder "kpalana" would then give me a new wordpress site with default theme, how would I log into it to make changes? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

  7. You'd go to kpalana.com/wp-admin and log in.
