Support » Fixing WordPress » How to switch back to 3.8???

  • I am having so many issues with 3.9

    I can’t insert links
    I can’t edit pictures ALT
    I can’t edit my galleries
My menus and posts, when editing, lock up.

    This 3.9 is a nightmare.

    I just want 3.8 until 3.9 actually works 🙁

  • I don’t know how to go back except to restore from a past backup you’ve made through your web host, but I wouldn’t recommend that.

I think most of the things you mentioned should be working with 3.9 though.

Inserting links should work the same as before. What steps were you taking to add one?Do you see any specific error messages about it?

The Alternative Text field is near the top of the Image Details screen when you click on the pencil on the image in the visual editor. Maybe you just didn’t see it before?

What happens when you try to click on a gallery? You should be able to click the gallery and then click the pencil icon that appears right from inside the visual editor.

I’m not sure about your posts locking up. Can you try switching to another browser to see if that particular problem is browser-specific by any chance? You should also make sure you’ve updated to the latest browser version if you can: http://browsehappy.com/

THANK YOU for your response and help!!

Before, all I did was highlight the text and then you click the little chain to insert a link. Now, if I highlight text and click the chain button, nothing happens. nothing. No error, but no way to add a link.

When I click an image I’ve inserted, there is no button to click on the image — I see that now you can use the sides to make it bigger or smaller, but there is no little red x or edit button to add info or an ALT Tag.

I also can’t see my galleries — before they were a big blank box and I’d click on them to see the two buttons in the upper left, but now all the separate pictures are listed. I have no way of knowing how to edit them. I am so so confused 🙁

What is the visual editor? Is this new. I am so so upset I can’t even do simply writing posts anymore 🙁 I should NEVER have downloaded 3.9, it is a nightmare 🙁

    Any further advice? Thanks!

Now that you’ve explained the problems a bit more, it sounds like a plugin conflict or a theme problem even (or some other outside influence) maybe.

As a first troubleshooting step, I’d recommend temporarily deactivating all plugins and switching to a default theme and then testing the editor again. This may help:

The visual editor is the default one you’re used to seeing, but there’s also a text version of the editor which is why I specified visual.

I performed the update from WP 3.8.3 to 3.9 using Softaculous interface in cPanel and after the update some functions of the visual/text editor stopped working. Disabling all plugins and activating the default 2014 theme did not solve the issue.

Turning on script debugging according to the instructions on this page http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors seemed to solve the issue but leaving my production WordPress installation with script debugging turned on does not seem ideal.

The problem seems to be that some legacy files are not being updated correctly by the Softaculous update script.

Make sure you create a backup of your original installation before trying to reinstall WordPress

To solve this issue, I installed a fresh wordpress installation to another (test) folder on my website and setup a subdomain to point to the new installation. Then I copied the original wp-content folder from the broken WP installation to the new test folder and exported the database from the broken installation to the new installation (updating the home and site options to point to the new subdomain). The new site worked fine including the editor was working correctly.

After verifying that WordPress was working with a fresh installation on the test site, I simply copied the contents of the fresh (test) installation folder into my original folder, replacing the original files (make sure you backup your wp-config.php file so you don’t accidently replace it with that of the new installation). After copying all the files from the new installation to my original installation folder, everything was working fine! (with all my original plugins and theme still activated).

This leads me to believe that the Softaculous update script missed some files during the upgrade process. I’m not sure if the same issue would occur if I ran the update script in WordPress directly or if I performed a manual update according to the instructions on this page https://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress.

So if you are using Softaculous and you experience this issue, you may want to try to perform a manual update of your WordPress installation (always create a backup before you do this).

I deactivated and deleted my ultimate no follow and now I can link to text in the editor. HOWEVER I can still not click on an added image to edit the ALT text. I then deactivated all plug ins and reactivated one by one. I STILL cannot edit an image.

Thank you Jeremiah, but everything you said here is foreign so I don’t think I’ll be able to follow your advice…. 🙂

Thanks so much for your responses. I feel that the developers should not release a faulty product, especially when there are newbies like me who cannot and do not have the time to learn the ins and outs of coding, etc.

Any advice on how to edit an image??

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

WildflowerRamblings: Sorry for the elaborate anecdote about my personal issues with the upgrade to 3.9. The main point I wanted to make is that I experienced the same issues you are describing here when I upgraded my WordPress installation using Softaculous’ auto updater (Softaculous is a plugin provided by many web-based hosting providers). If you have a similar situation, you may want to simply perform a manual upgrade by copying the files in the latest wordpress archive (latest.zip or latest.tar.gz) over your current installation. This solved the problem in my case.
