I am trying to figure out how to stop spam from flooding in through my comments. I already went and turned off commenting, but I am still getting thirty spam comments a day. I dont even know how or why since I already turned it off under the discussion tab. What is the next step?

    Why don't you use Akismet?

You're getting trackback spam. You can turn that off, also, but you lose many benefits of using it.
Make sure Akismet is activated and install the Bad Behavior plugin, also. Your spam will disappear.

thanks, but I cannot put in the key because I cannot find the key. I have WP installed on a server, not through WP.com- WHat is the next step?

I had the same problem, so on recommendation of a friend I installed Spam Karma (http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/)

    Works brilliant!

Spam karma 2, Bad Behavior and Akismet seem to be the favorites around here. They all work wonderfully if you install Bad Behavior and one of the other 2, you are gold.

SK2, BB and Akismet may be favorites but after installing them I found they were blocking a lot of my real readers in addition to possibly blocking spammers. False positives are not acceptable. Captchas and math have been more effective for me.
