   Using theme 2012... 2 columns.

   I have a header picture that's the width of the left (main) column. I expected the right column to slide up and start displaying right next to the picture. Instead, I have white space to the right of the header picture and the left column starts displaying below the bottom of the picture instead of next to it.

   Basically, I'd like the "MOST RECENT POSTS" to line up with the top of the header picture. That's the way Twenty Twelve is shown as a default but I can't make it do that.

   try using negative margins like
   margin-top: -10%;

   Make sure that you are not making any changes to theme files - they will be lost when WP is updated and it's imperative that you have an unmodified copy of the default theme for troubleshooting purposes. To make change, you should use a child theme:
