I’ve installed wp under multisite with subdomains option.

I have to setup a Site, domain.com, with 4 or 5 apps like classified, others etc as part of the site. I understand it can work.
If it can, then two possible options I’m thinking of:

**(1)install all apps (like classifieds, others) as separate subdomains like: app11.domain.com,
    app2.domain.com
    etc

and provide links on home page of domain.com

    OR:

**(2)install all apps in subdirectories of main domain.com like:
    domain.com/app1
    domain.com/app2
    etc

    My question:

**Is any one or both of options (1) & (2) are workable ?

**If yes, option (1) makes it like a separate sites for each app?
But I want user to see it as one site with all the links of domain.com to be visible in app pages and without any need for the user to reload main site in case he wants to go back, and minimum bandwidth usage. How to achieve this ?

**Can Option (2)work with my current installation (subdomain multisite) or I have to use subdirectory option of multisite ?

**what is best option, from above two, or any other option, to achieve my objective of keeping this as much as one site and minimize bandwidth usage.

Please guide if I’m thinking on feasible lines and what’s the best course to do it.

    Thanks for your guidance.

    Best

Are these actual apps, or just sites named classified etc?

    Hi Mika,
    Thanks for your response !
These are actual apps – fully functional – for purposes like classified ads (based on classified plugin theme), and other such applications which can be used by multiple users etc.
Basically, I want to have 4 or 5 different functional apps working under a common domain name.
    Thanks

Let me rephrase what I’m asking 🙂

Are these non-WordPress ‘apps’ (like say you have Drupal or MediaWiki installed in those locations) or WordPress sites running as an app?

All these apps are WordPress based – lets say for eg – ClassiPress for classified ads.
I used the word “app” as it is used by their developers (Appthemes etc) to present their themes.
No other platform (Joomla etc) is involved.
    I hope it clarifies.
    Thanks

@atek I’ve removed the post (you know which one) as well as your reply as neither one was really adding to the conversation.

Please try not to get bent out of shape over forum posts, it’s just not worth it. I recommend walking instead. 😉

How to setup a Site (in Multisite ) with 4 or 5 apps themes like classified etc

I think we’re getting stuck on terminology.

With a WordPress multisite installation you can have independent sites that can reference each other but aside from that don’t really talk to each other.

If by apps you just mean independent WordPress sites then the answer is yes. The different sites can have totally different themes and plugins activated.

If you mean apps like well, different apps (Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, etc.) then perhaps you can elaborate for us a little more concisely? I get that you mean WordPress only (I think) but normally we don’t refer to sites as “apps”.

    Hi,

My post was regarding the use of app-themes themes of which I have an understanding as do appthemes themselves.

I wasn’t trying to be condescending by my comments of the methods of obtaining these themes but was really trying to point out the obvious regarding the differences between getting support and not getting support if this was the case.

If you wanted to create a multisite network using your examples and using the app-theme themes it can be done quite easily hence why I posted the advice to ask in the specific forum.

1- You would get a very detailed answer
2 – They know what you can and can’t do with those specific themes

For any other themes you were ‘thinking’ of using then the same applies.

Go and visit the forums of the themes you might want to use and see if the answers to some of your questions are posted on there.

**(1)install all apps (like classifieds, others) as separate subdomains like: app11.domain.com,
    app2.domain.com
    etc

and provide links on home page of domain.com

Yes but you would have to create a landing page/theme on domain.com then add the links to this homepage which redirect to the sub-domains.

@bleem71: Please stop trying to pick an argument with forum moderators. If you are not going to post useful comments/suggestions for the original poster, then please do not post to the topic at all.

Yes, I meant WordPress only with different themes on different subdomains under multisite. My apology for using the term app. It created confusion.
Thanks – now I know that it works 🙂

Given that the ‘apps’ are just WordPress sites with a specific ‘theme’ (like I had a site for ‘videos’ once), then yeah you can totally do this with WordPress Multisite, or installing multiple, separate, WP installs.

No matter what, you’ll be using bandwith to jump between sites etc. Minimizing that is a factor of good themes etc.

    Hey Mika,
Thanks a lot for your response !
Got it. Will discuss bandwidth with theme developers.
    I love this community.
