How to set up a local "test bed"? (3 posts)

Could someone offer guidelines for setting up a local test environment for me to use as I develop my WP site? I am working on theme design and hosting on Yahoo. Everything on Yahoo works, but it would be nice to edit and test on my local PC before ftp-ing everything up. Not to mention fixing goof-ups!
I am running Winders XP Pro on the desktop and I have an old clunker XP machine as my 'server' - but getting some help thinking this through would be great! My idea is to develop for a block of time and when all my testing is done, I would just FTP all the changes at once.
    Thanks in advance!

For Win machines the best solution seems to be installing XAMPP from http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html
