• Hello,

I’m now planning to change a theme and overhaul the whole website on my current domain. However I want to make a notification on a front page to let visitors know that our website is under re- construction.

Support at our website hosting recommended us to set a new sub directory on the root in order to overhaul the whole website on a new theme and let the current website stays alive. Once the new one is done, domain be pointed to this sub directory and then all done. However, we encounter many difficulties and error setting as aforementioned.

    Any idea will be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

    This plugin might help you:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/ultimate-coming-soon-page/

It will show the page for logged in visitors, but everyone else will se a temporary page.

    Hi tormorton,

    Thank you for response.

Do you mean a temporary page is the current front page will be shown up once visitors logged in?

Can we overhaul the whole website right in the root by downloading and activating a new theme without having to create any subdirectory in the root?

    Thanks again for your help.

@pongpao, I have attempted to help you answer this question.

I have created a quick video, which you can use for any plugin. They are all similar in how they work.

    Quick Video: http://youtu.be/lqRys3X4U_I

    Notes:
Visit WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add New Plugins >
Search for “Maintenance Mode” or any similar keyword > Review and find a plugin that fits your needs
    .
Personally, I use Maintenance Mode by Michael Wöhrer. But you can use any of the plugins available.

Just find and activate the plugin that

    1. fits your needs,
    2. is updated regularly and
    3. has good reviews.

You will want a plugin that allows you to add HTML. This is useful for adding your Aweber or Constant Contact opt-in form so that you can collect names while you are under construction.

If you are not collecting names, the HTML feature will allow you to customize the look and feel of the maintenance page to match your website or to add more personality.

If this does not matter to you then any plugin will do.

Additional watch outs: Be sure you understand the features and additional features. Because what you need may required a small fee. Don’t get attached to a plugin until you have tested it for awhile.

I wish you luck on your website.

    Take Care,
    Carolette

P.S. Uploading to the sub directory is not needed if you upload through your WordPress dashboard. And if you chose this method it is best to use FTP (for example: FileZilla).
