I am trying to upload and import a bunch of new users, roughly 4000. I can upload them fine but how can I set a default password so they can login and reset their own password after they login?

Why not just have them send themselves a password reset? i.e. have them click the "Lost your password?" link on the login page. As long as you've uploaded valid emails with their username that should work, I think?
