• I recently took over maintaining an ugly website. I want to completely replace it with a wordpress template that I’ve purchased but I HAVE to keep the same domain name (GoBusinessChallenge.com) since it has been included in all the marketing for this summer camp.

Does anyone know how to go about replacing a non-wordpress site with a wordpress template while keeping the same domain name? So far I have been unable to find anything on this specific issue.

If anyone has any input or experience on this, your input would be greatly appreciated. I have a little HTML/FTP/Wordpress type experience, but the simpler the better! Thanks!

  • if you own the domain name, you should be able to install wordpress on it, do the work in getting all the content copied to the wordpress install, as far as making sure the links remain the same, that depends on what they are now, and that could be a bit of a pain. what you could do though. is write down all of the current links, hopfully theirs not a million.. and you could create the site in wordpress, then create all the new links, and then redirect the old links to their New url. so if one of the sites links right now is
    gobusinesschallange.com/hello.html

you could simply make that link redirect to
gobussinesschallange.com/hello/ which is the new wordpress link.. then the old links will simply automatically send a user to the new one, with the same content. but to the wordpress install version of it.. there may be better ways, maybe someone can help.

but now that i actually look at that site, the links are pretty simple. i think your current site will need to be “Down” for a while, but if you install wordpress on the server that its on and copy the content you could use permalinks that are just like your current ones, the only thing is attaching the .html or .htm to the new links sense wordpress does not use them. maybe someone else can hop in here and put their 2 cents!

    Thanks for your input!

My plan is to completely start from scratch, so I wouldn’t even need to bother about making sure the links are the same. From your post above it sounds like it would be even easier by avoiding that hassle.

Just to be sure, I would simply need to do a wordpress install using an FTP client under my current site and then remove the old content? Do you know if this would still allow me to update/edit my theme all online as I normally would?
