    A year ago, there was this topic here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/removing-the-parentheses-that-display-around-the-read-more-link?replies=6

    It's hard to believe, but the OP did not mention the solution.

    Now it's my turn to rip the hair out of my head and wonder how to get rid of "(" in front and ")" after the more link.

    What I am getting: ...class="more-link">(more…)
    What I expect: ...class="more-link">more…

    OK, while writing this, I found a solution: for v.3.3.1, edit line 185 of wp-includes/post-template.php to remove "(" and ")". Only the extra ones!

    No! Never edit WordPress core!

    edit line 185 of wp-includes/post-template.php

    general advice - do not edit WP core files.

    how the 'more' text is generated, depends on your theme and/or the default settings for the 'more' text - have a look into the loop of the index.php template and the Codex http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/the_content http://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_the_Read_More

    Thank you for telling me what not to do. Could you please also tell me what to do? (It wasn't my idea to mix presentation and logic, I pinky-swear.)

    your theme seems to be using the default, i.e. the_content(); without filled-in parameters;
    try to use the_content('more...'); instead - possibly in index.php of your theme (and archive.php etc http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy )
