   I was wondering how to remove the "comment" button off the main page but still leave the ability to do it within the post..

   If it is a 'Page' you are working on, you can disable the comments on each specific page by going into the edit screen of that page, in the discussions section, you can untick the box saying 'Allow comments.'

   If you can't see the discussion box, click 'Screen options' at the top of the page, and tick 'Discussion'. The discussions section will now appear further down your page.
