How to redirect one subdomain to another hosting? (8 posts)

I have a multisite network setup. So,

    example.com
    sd1.example.com
    sd2.example.com

    These all work fine.

I want to redirect one subdomain say

    newsite.example.com

to another hosting provider possibly a non WP site. I have added A mapping on the DNS setup (another IP) but that website just keeps one going to Signup page and the WP Multisite seems to takeover somehow.

How do I set this up correctly or is it even possible?

I have searched all over the net but didn't find anything specific to this. I tried MU Domain Mapping plugin but it just keeps going in a redirection loop.

    Any help is really appreciated.

    Thanks! :)

  2. Check via whatsmydns.com to make sure the A-name propogated.

If it has, you may need to ask your webhost how to override it, since I'm guessing you're using wildcard subdomains, and that's where the conflict is coming from.

Thanks for the reply. Should I remove the wildcard entry?

Oh the A record has the proper IP from that site. Even pinging the subdomain gives the proper IP that I used. I am just confused on why WP is taking over and the subdomain directs to a signup page.

I have the *.example.com set to the main IP. I tried removing it and the URL is now redirecting to itself? I get

    http://www.newsite.example.com/newsite.example.com

very weird.. I have added the wildcard entry back for now. I am not even sure what I am doing. I have asked the webhost but if you have any other idea, that would be great. :) Thanks.

  5. Go ask your Webhost about this, they'd be able to tell you how to do this (or if it's not supported).

Just DO NOT mention WordPress. All you have to ask is this: I want a subdomain to point to a separate IP and it's not working.

They said the IP is routing correctly so its a WordPress issue. So, I guess I am not getting anywhere. Thanks for your support.

From what I understand, the subdomain(s) will not be associated with the WordPress Multisite setup. All you want to do is redirect a subdomain somewhere else -- you just happen to also have a multisite installation on the root domain. Therefore, simply add the subdomain to your hosting account and place a redirect index.html file in its home directory?

    <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; url=http://www.newdomain.com">

I'm sorry if I mis understood what you want to do :-)

This is why you don't mention WP. Sometimes a host gets stuck on it being someone else's beef.

    *sigh*

Okay, look. It can ONLY be WordPress if you point newsite.example.com to where WordPress is installed, right? And if newsite.example.com is pointing to where WP is installed, and you want it to point to another domain, then that's what's going on.

Now. I don't think it's WordPress... But I DO think it's how you set up your server for WP.

Do you have Wildcard subdomains on? If so, turn 'em off.
