   I need to add the code that retrieves the posts to a php file so that I can display the recent posts on a static page. How can I do this? I've been looking around and trying various things but I can't find out how to just display the posts the way they look on a normal blog page!

   The way posts look on a 'normal blog page' depends on your theme.   Find the code that is displaying the blog posts (maybe in index.php) and use the same code in your static page.
