Heh. It’s called “EXIF” data, and it can hold many attributes about pictures, including descriptions and such.

WordPress added EXIF and IPTC support a while back. If your server supports it, then WordPress will attempt to read all the useful information it can, and then it will make that information available to the theme and the post and such.

Almost all digital cameras produce EXIF data in the photos, with info such as the type of camera, date/time, etc. Many news outlets, like the Associated Press, also put EXIF descriptions and such into their photos, as you have discovered.

Google for any EXIF editor and you will be able to put this sort of info into your own photos as well.

    thanks,
    just 2 question:
1- when i save the picture from it main source: http://img05.beijing2008.cn/20080808/Img214517234.jpg
and then upload it with wp, it hasn’t any description!!!!
but when i save it from the page: http://en.beijing2008.cn/ceremonies/photos/openingceremony/performances/n214517233.shtml
    description will appear automatically! why?

2- how can i put EXIF descriptions on my pictures?

    1. I see the description either way. Sometimes Windows can screw up EXIF data. Try to use Firefox instead of IE.

    wordpress spport IPTC data,
i use “PhoroInfoEX” Software for editing My Pictures.
for Adding IPTC Description In This Software, you should Select The Picture And then Edit “caption / Abstract” Area In “IPTC Info” Tab!
Then WordPress Will Show it automatically!

    Hi, this supports exif data.

I just discovered that when you add captions to pictures in Picasa, it will write them to the picture as the IPTC description. So.. use Picasa. It’s awesome. 🙂
