How to modify the homepage?

The default behaviour of wordpress’s homepage is to list the latest blogs from different categories in reverse chronological order.

Which bit of the code would I need to modify to
1) Display content from one of the page on the top
2) The first 10 posts from 1 of the category on the bottom.

I don’t seem to see any plugins that do this.
