   Hi,

   I've tried searching and using google but can not find any specifics.

   This is the first time I have used wordpress; I have used Dreamweaver in the past and have very very basic knowledge of HTML.

   I have seen websites on the net, that use a particular theme, however, it looks nothing like the theme it is based on.

   I have tried the same themes, but do not understand how I can make them look so specific, and not like a generic theme.

   I want to create something that only my site would have.

   Hope the above makes sense.

   I've seen how people use photoshop to slice templates etc, but would that not be creating a new theme? I do not understand if people do this, how it can be used with the theme they downloaded for free of WP.

   If someone who understands the above waffle could help, or link me to some resources/previous posts that would be most helpful. I am looking at buying the CSS/HTML for dummies too so I can learn a little more about coding etc.

   Any help would be appreciated.

   it's a bit hard to follow as it's full of technical details. but it contains the basics you must know if you want to customize your own theme.

   Generally, you can change the look of a theme just by modifying the CSS file. That controls what the site looks like.

   If you need to change the structure, then you'll have to use PHP and edit the template files (.php file extentions).

   Photoshop is only useful to come up with a pretty picture of how the site should look. Someone still needs to translate that pretty picture to the actual PHP and CSS code.
