How many requests are you making?
For starters, you can hard-code certain things in your template files to help this.
An example, instead of calling a stylesheet like
<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/whatever/style.css
,
Hardcode the correct file structure without a php call.
Also there some plugins that do a decent job at this, I believe.
