    How many requests are you making?

    For starters, you can hard-code certain things in your template files to help this.

    An example, instead of calling a stylesheet like
    <?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/whatever/style.css,

    Hardcode the correct file structure without a php call.

    Also there some plugins that do a decent job at this, I believe.

    Here is a decent write-up

    Basically just link to your stylesheet without using any php calls.
