How to make a new PHP page with pre-existing theme? (4 posts)

I'm new to WordPress and was helping someone edit a page, and was wondering if it is possible to add additional PHP files to an existing theme.

Basically what I've done is made an extra column by editing the CSS file and page.php file, and I want to make it so all that's in that column is something lik e<?php include rightcolumn.php ?>, so all that someone would need to do to edit it is go to that PHP file rather than search through code on the main page template.

Is this possible? I've looked all over the place and can't find anywhere that I can create a new one.

Changes to a pre-existing theme will erase once the theme is updated.
You ought to apply changes to a Child Theme.

    It's a custom theme for this site only so that's a non-issue.

To answer my question, do I just have to place them in the right directory via FTP and they will show up in the editor?

Anything that you upload into your current theme directory, shows up in the theme editor. And yes, you can use include in the file.
