   is there a way i can limit certain users to be able to post in one specific category rather than being able to post wherever they like? and also is there a way i can allow users to edit one single page as opposed to editing everything?

   When you say 'everything' do you mean all their posts or all posts? If it's all posts there is a problem because contributors should only be able to edit their posts.

   thats fine, i only want them to be able to edit their own posts, but i want them to be able to put new posts up in a certain category

   (ie - i have an artists section that i want the artist to be able to update themselves, ie post a new blog, post a new song, post new pictures, but for it only to come under their artist category)

   This is something I would also like to do ... define which categories users can post to. Did you ever resolve this?

   Okay .. So no-one has addressed this.

   The requirement is simple.

   Allow a specific user level to log into wordpress, and then create posts that only appear within a category.

   How hard can this be to set up?

   I think you may need a plugin crafted that make it happen.
   WP does not have this capabilities by default - but with filters it could be possible.
