    Ok I'm wondering how to edit wordpress code to only show a certain # of letters on my homepage and the full article on its subpage.

    Does anyone know how to do this?

    Btw: please don't suggest plugins that are paragraph aware or that do not work

    Thanks

    It's not really clear what you want.

    Do you want just a teaser of posts showing a certain number of letters of that post on the homepage, and then you click on the post to go to a new page showing the full post?

    If so, check out the_excerpt() and this.

    no, I want there to be a word limit for every post on my homepage.

    I've read the_excerpt stuff and for some reason none of it makes sense, or it doesn't work....

    I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but try this (it's really easy):

    Homepage Excerpts Plugin

    Install this plugin, then at Settings -> Homepage Excerpts you can define how many words to show on the homepage for each post before reaching the "read more" link.

    This will then show the number of words of each post you specify on the homepage.

    You can choose the number of "excerpts" to show on your home page at Settings -> Reading -> "Blog pages show at most"

    I hope this helps but I'm sorry if I misunderstood you.

    the_excerpt() does this, but perhaps that plugin linked by Kudama is best for you.

    You'll need to go a bit more in depth than "won't work." What doesn't work?

    Also, note this about the_excerpt():

    Displays the excerpt of the current post with [...] at the end, which is not a "read more" link. If you do not provide an explicit excerpt to a post (in the post editor's optional excerpt field), it will display a teaser which refers to the first 55 words of the post's content. Also in the latter case, HTML tags and graphics are stripped from the excerpt's content. This tag must be within The Loop.
