How to limit front page posts to "summary length"? (5 posts)

I want to have 10 or so of the most recent blogs on my front page, but not the full posting (as it would make a page which scrolls down forever and ever). How can I get it to stop at, say 150 words, and then link to the full posting (in the archives, presumedly)?

    Thanks kindly for your help!

Edit your index file and replace the_content with the_excerpt.

    + the links from there

This also strips HTML and graphics, which might make the initial pageload faster. Just what I needed, thanks :-)
