How can I let subscribers post on my site VIA CHANGES IN THE DATABASE?

I realize there are plugins for this, but I need to do this via changing the database.

(If you really want to know why, this is why. But it's not really important.)

The reason is that I used those plugins before, but something went haywire with them, so I made the change in the database (if I remember right). Recently I had to have my database cleaned out due to a nasty hack, and a lot of info was lost. So now I have a lot of subscribers who can't post anymore. There are too many to know who they are. So I can't just bump them up to contributor. So I need to allow subscribers to post.

I really doubt you changed it in the database - if so, not smart
a simple form can do it

I know I changed it somewhere, because at one point I deleted all my plugins and subscribers were still allowed to post. (This was with a new WordPress install too, so I don't think it was a core hack.)

I thought I had changed the database options or something, but I can't remember.
