I’m working on switching an existing publicly available HTML site to WordPress. I have installed WP into the root of the existing site and am building the new pages for review by the client. So, we have index.html and index.php happily coexisting. But, of course, I can’t test the navigation in the WP site because the pages redirect to index.html. I can temporarily rename index.html, but that means visitors will get directed to the password-protected WP site.

I could install WP into another directory, but moving it to the root when it’s done and approved by the client would not be trivial. I did that for another installation and it was kinda painful.

Is there another strategy I could adopt to make it possible to develop a WP site in the same directory as a functional html site?

  • No there is no way around you need install wordpress on it own in folder so that you do not have conflict and Move wordpress to root or use from directory.

Once you have wordpress all set up in folder all you need to do is move the html files in another folder and then move wordpress to root.
