Getting started with AWS can be overwhelming if you don't have a deep technical background. When I first installed WordPress on an AWS micro instance, it kept running out of memory and crashing. Then, when I installed a custom, responsive theme on a larger instance, it was still quite slow.
The Apache, W3TC, Varnish solution is straightforward and provides great performance. You can run it at AWS for $6.44 a month (micro instance) or $17 monthly (small instance).
The guide also covers setting up and securing your instance, postfix and mysql and adding support for New Relic, Google Page Speed, et al.
