Hi, I am very new to this but i dont know how to install a plugin.
I know that you have to go to the http://www.name of blog]/wp-content/plugin and upload it but I dont see a place to upload the plug in?
all i see are files of current plugins and the folders for them
I must be doing something wrong
HELP!

Is there a step by step how to on how to go about uploading a plugin via FTP
it seems like wordpress is not for beginners I find it very confusing

You upload the plugin using either your control panel/file manager or as previously stated, an ftp client (follow whooami's links to find one).
The plugin you wish to use needs to be uploaded to the plugins folder as you stated in your original post. Once that's done, access your blog's admin section, click on the Plugins tab, and activate the plugin you uploaded.
Uploading and wordpress arent really connected, except that sometimes one must "upload" to extend the functionality of wordpress. And some folks even have to upload WordPress, it appears you installed it via Plesk or Cpanel.. or something similar.
Once you have an ftp client installed, it's a matter of connecting to your ftp with your client. The interfaces of ftp clients are going to vary from client to client, they do not all have the same buttons, features, etc..
Your ftp login and password is typically given to you by your host at the time you initially set up your hosting.
Once you have ftp'd in you will see a directory structure not unlike what you would see on your own computer in, say for instance, the "explorer" (start/run/explorer) screen in Windows.
Every WordPress installation comes with a plugin directory. It's located here:
Root of WordPress Install/
wp-content/
wp-plugins/
Plugins get uploaded to the wp-plugins directory.
If you have cpanel access and are familiar with the file manager area, you can upload plugins through there as well. Just abide by the same directory structure I set out above.

Ok i figured out how to install a plug in.. I am using fetch 5.1 and I properly installed it. Yay for me.. but alas! another problem has risen
Apparently yahoo is still using 2.0.2 and so I tried to upgrade to 2.0.3. I followed all the instructions and deleted only files that i needed and uploaded the newest unpacked version of wordpress..
well sorry to say its not working very well

I just deactivated and I will try again.. better for me to make mistakes now then if I had a full blown blog

Well, yes, better than with hundreds of posts. Very true, and you are being a right trouper about this, cheerful is good!
Yahoo is problematic as a host. And it's WAY past my bedtime. So keep trying, and post back if you're still having problems - most of the other mods are "east" of me, so earlier tomorrow, maybe they'll have helped you out before I even get back on.

Yea it is problamatic for me. I seem to have done everything right..
upgrade from a new 2.0.2 --> 2.0.3
delete all folders and files except for wp-config.php and wp-content.php
then using fetch 5.1 FTP (for OSX) I installed the update using "SHIFT" to highlight all files.
Everything seemed to go into place, however when I type my BLOG URL its just a white blank page?

Maby this is told before, i just say what i did..
1. Get Ftp client ( filezilla or WS_PRO or 1000 of others)
2. Login etc.
3. Go to : root/wp-content/plugin (root = everything that is viewable on your site)
4. Open the README
5. Most of the time you have to upload a few items in the map /plugin, activate it, and than, depends on the plugin you have to edit a file, But just read the ReadMe very carefully!, becaus they always discribe what has to be done.
