• I’ve recently moved from Blogger to WP so forgive me if this sounds basic. How do I install plugins? I found the one I wanted, downloaded to my computer, unzipped it . . . now what? I’ve read past forum questions, WordPress codex, and even bought the book WordPress 2. I still can’t figure it out. Someone please help me! I know I’m supposed to upload a file to wp-content/plugins but I don’t know how to do it.

    Thank you.

Uploading is accomplished using an ftp client:

I installed a ftp client. Now what? Sorry, but I need step-by-step directions. I am totally lost. Thank you!

Well, you’ll need to follow the help files for the ftp client to learn how to connect to your website on your host, navigate to the wp-content/plugins folder and start the upload process.

Once you’ve learned how to use the ftp client, and uploaded the plugin files, then you’ll need to access the wp-admin section of your blog, navigate to the plugins tab, and activate the plugins.

Kailani, people can only help so much through the medium of text. I’d suggest going out and finding a live human being who can actually show you what to do, because that way, you’ll be more likely to figure it out and understand what’s going on.

FTP’ing is pretty basic and essential to operating a site on the internet, so if you don’t know how to do it, then you really can’t operate a site correctly in the first place. Getting some direct, hands on instruction would be preferable to trying to read how to do it.

Basically, you’re not going to get “step-by-step” directions. It’s not like making food from a receipe or something. What you actually do depends on lots of things, and what you need to learn and understand is the process, not the instructions.

also, some plugins have special instructions unique to them. sometimes you need to do more than just install the files in the plugins dir and activate them in the admin area.

docs on plugins are here > http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins it covers the installation process.

I read a book and was able to figure it all out. Thanks anyway.

    Sounds like a good book!
