[resolved] How to import google spreadsheet (8 posts)

    Hi,

    I've been googling all evening but couldn't find the answer;

I have a shared google spreadsheet ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoG2_PDE77sydC1uVGtjeEVvZTFxNTVKMEtwTTNTbUE&usp=sharing ) with runners' name ranking and mileage.

What I want to do is to import the data from the spreadsheet, sort them based on ranking in a table and show the mileage.

    How do I do that?

It'll be good enough if you can point me to a tutorial page, newbie proof.

    thanks a lot

    Hi,

    thanks for the question.

The easiest way would be to simply download the table as a "comma separated file" (CSV). You can then import that into TablePress.

Note that this will only import the data, but not the styling/coloring. You would have to re-do that with CSS code.

    Regards,
    Tobias

wow, thank you for the quick reply.

Styling it with css is exactly what I want, so it fits better with the theme.

So there is no way to dinamically impprt the csv? the only way is to export and import every time I update the data?

    Thanks for your time

    Hi,

no problem for the reply :-)

CSS styling is not directly connected to TablePress, but for a few examples, please see the TablePress FAQ at http://tablepress.org/faq/

And yes, you can not "connect" TablePress to the Google Spreadsheet, if that's what you mean. You'll have to export/import each time (and choose to replace the existing table).

    Tobias

Hello! sorry If I am asking in this thread but I think it's kind of relevant. I wanted to import a csv file from a dropbox URL.

I am inputting the direct download link of the file from my dropbox and I inputted it in the file from URL part inside the import tab. But I always get an error that says the file is invalid or cannot be accessed or something.

I got the link by going to the public URL of the file in my dropbox and I right clicked the download button and copied the link. Is this the URL that I need?

    Hi,

thanks for the question, and sorry for the trouble.

Most likely, this means that the server then has no access rights to that URL, either because outgoing requests fail or because Dropbox blocks it somehow.

I recommend to simply download the file and then import the table with the "File Upload" method.

    Regards,
    Tobias

At this point I should consider the DB workaround and create a DB inside WP where I can insert data for different athletes. Do you know how to or can you point me to a tutorial or plugin?

    Thanks

    Hi,

no, sorry, I don't really have a starting point for that :-( You might want to start with the WordPress Codex, to learn about plugin development.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias
