    I need some advice on how to control user access to my website.

    My understanding of wp is that the default login is for developer/administrator of the website, someone like me.

    How do I control visitors to the website? Do I create a separate login page for them? I want different access for different user roles and session timeouts, etc. Some pages should be available without a login.

    For example, once a user login and I know his assigned role from his db record, I need to present a different menu for that user role.

    I just can't see how the existing wp functionalities fit into my requirements.

    The default login page is used by everybody, from admins to visitors who want to register. If you want to change menu's on different user roles you might wanna take a look at this plug-in:
