Support » Theme: Ridizain » How to get a design like in the Ridizain demo?

    I’m sorry to ask this…
I’m pretty new to wordpress and I loved this theme, but I can’t seem to get a design like the one in the demo. I do know how to add pages, posts and manage most things, but I just don’t get the desired design.
No matter how many pages, posts, widgets I add, the design is always a 2 or 3 column page with a horizontal header, something like this: http://oi58.tinypic.com/2h713bc.jpg
I’d really like to get something similar to the demo, where there are more columns in a row than in the next one, and posts seem to be less “structured” than in most themes.
Basically, I don’t want my site looking too much like a blog (with a list of posts and links to archives at one side), and that’s why I loved this theme, but I just don’t seem to get it right 🙁
Is there any kind of guide or basic help to get me started?

    Hello Anarelle,

First of thanks for using Ridizain for your site and I’m so glad you love the theme 🙂

I’ll do my best to assist you get the site looking like the demo or as close as possible.

Firstly, let start by making sure that all (or most of) the posts have a featured image (post thumbnail) allocated to them. This can be done on the post add/edit page – you’ll find the section at the bottom right of the page.

Secondly, make sure that you have a few categories set with a good number of posts attached to them.

Finally, make sure you have at least 3 posts from the above collection tagged with a desired tag for the featured section – for simplicity lets call this tag “featured”

Now to put it all together…

Top section is driven by the Featured content function and this pulls posts marked with the desired tag i.e featured. Visit the customizer and click on the Ridizain Featured Content tab, select the number of posts to show – for now lets keep at 3. Check we have the correct tag in place and that Grid is selected and save. At this point checking the site should have the Featured Grid showing with the 3 posts.

Do remember that the posts selected for the featured section will now not show in the blog feed – unless you select to show them.

Now for the left column (sidebar): Visit the widget section (found under the Appearance tab). Here you’ll notice a widget title Ridizain – Recent Posts. Drag and drop this in the Primary Sidebar section, the widget will automatically expand with options to select the desired category, number of posts to show and a few check boxes for extra options. Make your desired selections and click on save – now viewing the site you’ll see the a list of posts down the left column.

Do the same for the right sidebar – either use the Recent Post widget above or use the Ridizain Ephemera to showcase your Post Format Types.

Lets start with the above and then come back with other settings if the need be.

    Regards,
    Zulf

Zulf, I’m back here because I’ve got very close to the beautiful design you have in the demo, but still not quite right:

-I see that for the featured section you have 4 posts that use up the whole page width. In my case, the primary sidebar shows at the left of the featured posts. I’d like it to start in the next “line”.
-The footer seems not to work, as I’ve added a “Pages” widget to it to have a bottom menu, but the links show in the primary sidebar.
-The “Ridizain: Recent posts” widget shows blank for me. I’ve tried setting different amounts of posts to be displayed, selected different categories to show, but still, I only get the widget title and no content. Would this be a bug or just me messing around too much?

    Thanks again!

    Hello Anarelle,

Let me see what I can do to help…

OK, this one is simple – in the new version I’ve added a new option (a check box) to switch the feature layout to 4 columns. Check that box, save and the Featured section will be span full width with the left sidebar being moved down.

-The footer seems not to work, as I’ve added a “Pages” widget to it to have a bottom menu, but the links show in the primary sidebar.

This one I’ll need to have a look at the site to see exactly what you mean and hopefully be able to offer some assistance there.

-The “Ridizain: Recent posts” widget shows blank for me. I’ve tried setting different amounts of posts to be displayed, selected different categories to show, but still, I only get the widget title and no content. Would this be a bug or just me messing around too much?

That’s a strange one. Let me look in to the code and do some test to see what is going on – will get back to you on this one.

I came across this thread and was very impressed. So helpful.

    I do have one question:

I too am trying to create a page similar to the demo. In the featured posts section at the top, I cannot get the text to show up unless I hover the cursor over it. Is there a way to make the text always visible?

    thanks.

Sounds like you have a color setting clash – try switching colors around. The options can be found in the Customizer under the Colors tab.

    Perfect! Thanks.

    One more question:
Is there a way to hide all the sidebars on pages except the home page?

    Thanks

    Awesome.

Currently the right sidebar can be hidden from the home and single view pages. Will be looking at implementing those options for archives and searches soon. Option for the left sidebar is a bit tricky to implement for all pages but one – but again, looking for ways to get this done on this one too.

As for pages – the theme comes with a full width page template which is used to hide the rights sidebar for pages using the template.

    Hope that helps,
    Zulf
