I am using the built in RSS widget, but it does not seem to be picking up updates in the target RSS feed (it happens to be pointing to my Facebook links). Is there any way to force the RSS widget to go update the feed? Thanks.

Your RSS feeds will be updated at regular intervals. If too many updates are carried out too often, this has the same effect as DOS attack on the site that is outputting the feed. So try to be patient and wait a few hours.
