I am aware that there is a plugin like this:
    title icon

but it doesn't work in my case (dont know why) and even if it worked it is a bit to awkward to use: one has to create a new custom field every time etc...

I would like the automatic conversion into smilies to work in the title field as well. When I type :-) in the text area it creates a smiley. I would like titles to react the same way. I have already modified the icons in functions.php. The purpose of it is the possibility to visually tag blog entries: some get a camera icon indicating that there are photos, some get an exclamation mark to indicate that they are 'hot topics' etc... So far I get what I type and nothing is converted info smilies/icons.

Since there seems to be no direct solution for my issue (lack of replies explains it all), I've managed to create a workaround for that.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/category-icons/

This does what I want but in a different way. I originally wanted to use custom smilies to tag interesting topics, but this is the same idea as proper categorizing.

With the plugin above I can assign an icon (any popular image file) to my topic titles. I have a category called 'tech' and an icon for that, I have a category called 'photos' with a camera icon. I also have additional categories that emphasize the importance of topic. I simply create a category called '!' and assign an exclamation mark image. One can also create categories like '1 star', '2 stars' etc... and include the appropriate icons with stars.

The plugin works flawlessly for me. These were just some thoughts in case someone else has the same problem.
