    I am using the wordpress twenty eleven theme. I have been able to change the color of the text for the menu bar using:
    #access li a {color: red;}

    But when I try to change the actual background color for the menu bar it doesnt work. I used this:
    #access {background-color: green;}/* nothing happens with this code */

    I dont know if there is some conflictions going on with the current styles in the style.css file or what but I need to fix this.
    Thanks in advance

    Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. First create a child theme for your changes. Or use a custom CSS plugin.

    Retry Josh's suggestion either within a Child Theme stylesheet, or within a Custom CSS plugin's allocated area of the dashboard.

  8. Yep, definitely use a child theme if you are not already.

    You will probably have to manually refresh your browser before noticing the adjustment.

    If it still doesn't work.. you might need to add !important like this:

    #access {
        background: #107F17 !important;
    }
