[resolved] How to display the_excerpt else when logged in the_content ? (6 posts)

    Hello Chad

A site using Pages, blocks Pages to unregistered users with wp-members.

    Good. Excellent plugin.

I would like unregistered users to see a teaser "the_excerpt" on each page.

I am able to manually add the <!--more--> tag, but this is a monotonous task for 2k pages.

Is it possible to do something like display the_excerpt else logged in display the_content ?

    Thanks

That's a good question I don't currently have an answer for. I had been working on a function inside the plugin to create an excerpt on the fly if there was no 'more' tag. In fact, that function had been enabled in a previous release. But in certain configurations, as currently written, it caused some problems for a number of users, so I removed it.

With the increased popularity of the plugin, it's probably a good time to revisit that as a feature. I had held back on features that required admin options for awhile - mainly because the plugin is getting a very large admin makeover for version 2.8. So now that I am rebuilding the admin, it may be a good time to look into adding that as an option.

I'm guessing it must be quite a useful option to have for those like me who have a ton of pages they want to allow excerpts for but don't want to spend time adding the <!--more--> tag to each page.

+1 for finding the time to add it to your new release.

The automatic excerpt function will be (re)included in the upcoming 2.8 release. I expect that initially the functionality will be to optionally enable this feature and to set the number of words to include in the excerpt. It will also only kick in if there is no 'more' tag already, so it will not override existing excerpts.

Great, that sounds like an excellent approach.

    OK 2.8 is now installed.

I ticked the auto excerpts check box and opted for 150 words.

As expected the excerpts are being generated. Excellent!
