My site is for a book author whose story is set in Russia. I’ve included a page in Russian to appeal to that audience. But no matter which character encoding I choose in the “Reading” settings for WP (ko18, ko18r, windows 1251), I can’t get the fonts to display correctly. I get ????? instead.

I had it working fine when I first set up the site in WP 3.0. Due to a hacker wrecking the site, I’m doing a clean install, and now the fonts don’t appear correctly. and I can’t remember what I did to get it to work! Arg. I do have backup files and dbase for the old site; is there somewhere in there I can find a clue?

I’m running 2010 Weaver theme, if that helps. Anyone know how I can get the words to display correctly on the site in Russian?

    Thanks in advance.

I figured out a fix. It involves messing with the database files, so it’s not for the faint of heart… but it seems to have worked.

I use cpanel for hosting admin and database management. In PhpMyAdmin, I opened the dbase table for wp_icl_translations, then clicked on the “edit” icon for the page I wanted to appear in Russian. I changed the source_language_code to ru, then selected from the Function pull-down menu “MD5” and saved it.

Then, back in WP, I copy and pasted in the Russian copy and saved it. Voila.

Hope this helps someone else save a bunch of time.
