   I have included two individual widgets for Archived and Categories in my layout. However redundantly there still is one widget where archived / categories are displayed combined. This is a default widget, i.e. there is no way in the widget config do disable it. How shall this be done?

   Look in your theme and open sidebar.php in a text editor...it's probably hardcoded there and you will need to remove it.

   It Works.
   It is not the most elegant way, but sometimes brute force is acceptable.
