I am not sure whay you mean by ‘disable commenting on all posts older than 365 days’ but
Admin Dashboard>Settings>Discussion>Automatically close comments on articles older than>enter xx>days.
This has worked well for me, if not for you consult theme dev (or review plugins, also if using caching plugin clear server cache)
afaik, there is nothing by default in the WordPress core which makes a connection between allowing comments and showing existing comments.
this might be caused by the coding of comments.php of your theme;
please contact the theme’s developer for support.

I want to disable comments on certain posts, or else, disable comments on all posts older than xx days. I tried going to the individual post and disabling comments there, then I also tried instead to go to the Settings > Discussion and clicked to disable commenting on all posts older than 365 days. However either way I did it, I noticed then when I refreshed the post which I wanted to stop having people comment on, the post no longer displays comments that have already been published.
Surely one can disable ability to comment on a post without it removing comments that have already been made an published. How is this done?
FYI, using Thesis theme, 1.8.5, and latest version of WP (3.5.1)
thanks
