How to customize my theme with no dashboard editor? (3 posts)

I am trying to customize a blog for a friend. He has a theme picked out and thats it. There seems to be no simple way of adding/removing widgets, re-naming menu items, changing photos. I have looked around the code and even making changes to that and clicking "update file" is doing nothing. I am a web developer but have never touched blogs. Is there a simple step I'm missing because I am not getting any sort of Dashboard menu for simple editing like shown here. http://codex.wordpress.org/File:dashboard.png . Been a long couple of weeks trying to figure this out.

    Cheers

get FTP access from your friend. download the theme you are using. make revisions using Notepad or bbedit. then FTP upload the theme file/s or folder back to friend's server.
