• I’m a little embarrassed to ask this, because it feels like I’m missing something really simple. But here goes:

I’m not a professional designer, but I’ve picked up quite a bit along the way. Now I am trying to create my own theme from scratch. I’m beginning by trying to modify the “default” or “kubrick” theme. And there’s one thing I just cannot figure out…

This theme has two columns. How do I create a third or fourth column? Is it in the style sheet, or do I need to make a change in the templates? Help!

    Both!
And Kubrick is not for beginner designers, sorry. Leave it alone. Find a 3 or 4 column theme and work with that one “from scratch”.

Moshu, I don’t entirely disagree with you. But how am I going to learn how to create a theme if I don’t ever try to create a theme? I’ve modified the free themes in many different ways. To me, this is the logical next step in learning about theme design.

If Kubrick is not for beginners, then what is? Is there another theme that you can recommend that is simple, but easy to modify?

Seriously dudes! I could use some help here. If I don’t use Kubrick, what should I use? If I do use Kubrick, what should I do?

If you want a 3 or 4 column theme – find one and start working from that one.

On the other hand: if you want to be able to add columns to an existing theme – you need to be fluent in XHTML and CSS. There is no “tell me the one magic line” to do it. Sorry.

Moshu, I feel like I’m repeating myself.

I’m not doing this because I want a 3 or 4 column theme. I’m doing this because I want to know how to create themes. I am quickly getting the feeling that I am not going to get any help on this forum.

I may not be fluent in XHTML or CSS. But I do know an awful lot about it, and also about MySQL and PHP. I have one specific question: how to add or delete columns. If you don’t want to help me, just say so.

how to add or delete columns.

There is no one line answer.
    There is no one-click solution.

If you know an awful lot about HTML and CSS then you should be able to answer your own question. Designing a 2-3-4 column layout is NOT a WP-specific issue. It is webdesign. The “columns” are just divs aligned next to each other, usually kept together by a wrap div. That’s how you do it.

Before making my very first theme I’ve downloaded at least 10 themes and dissected them, read and analyzed their code. Although I could make any kind of HTML/CSS design even before but needed to learn how the template files work together in a theme.
